Tried & Tested - Cryotherapy

Updated: Feb 10, 2020

A couple of weeks ago I popped into the Wellness Empowerment Collective - a new space in Lynham Canberra, centered around a holistic approach to health, beauty and wellness. Yes, that is my kind of language, I was like a kid in a candy store exploring this place!

Ebony, the founder of the Wellness Empowerment Collective, walked me through the space and explained the different treatments, the link between physical and mental health, the newest in technology and how we can best use these tools to improve our health. I decided to try out the Cryospa treatment followed by a Cryofacial and pulse technology to assist with some injuries - namely my ACL knee injury and sciatica nerve pain which has been ruining my life for the past three months.

I have to be honest, I was nervous. "How can this make sense" I was thinking in my head as I put on ugg boots, long socks, gloves and a mask to cover my mouth. I was preparing to spend 2 minutes in a freezing chamber, dancing to music to stay pumped up and checking in with Ebony the entire time in case I wanted to come out early.

It actually wasn't scary at all! It was weird, but good weird, effective weird, shit this must be doing something weird. It wasn't actually as cold as I expected it to be, it wasn't like jumping into an ice bath which was how I imagined it. By about 1 minute and 45 seconds I was counting down every second ready to get the hell outta there but as soon as it was over I was surprised how fast it actually went. I stepped out feeling buzzed and invigorated. My legs were red from the chill but everything else felt fine, I didn't feel any discomfort, it was more of a rush.

I LOVED this. It felt like ultra cool air being absorbed into my face. It was calming, comfortable and relaxing. The cold reduces inflammation and I could feel the effects immediately. I am not lying when I say I was more plump and revived the next day. I was told it can take a few sessions to see a strong result but I saw it the very next day. Brighter, lighter and more youthful. I am definitely keen to try this again.

Am I Sold?

Yes! There is absolutely something to Cryotherapy - it rejuvenates the body as it is thrown into quick acceleration mode following the exposure to freezing temperatures, flowing blood around the body to heal and repair. This rush of circulation is incredibly healing and speeds up recovery for tired muscles, inflammation, a sluggish system and dull skin. Interestingly too, we tried the Cryofacial laser on my knees which both struggle with injury and the temperate took some time to drop which showed just how inflamed my knee joints were inside. I had relief from pain and tightness the next few training sessions which was amazing!

I can't wait to get back in the Cryospa room and also get another Cryofacial facial, this is something I absolutely loved and want to include into my life. I also can't wait to try some of the other treatments as well as yoga classes.

Whatever you want to try in the newest, latest and greatest in health and beauty, the Wellness Empowerment Collective has it all. There is a salt room, float tanks, compression pants, a state of the art laser machine, massages, reike, fitness classes, the list goes on and on.

I asked Ebony, the founding director, a couple of questions to get a better idea of exactly what the Wellness Empowerment Collective is all about....

What is the Wellness Empowerment Collective all about? We are all about empowering our clients with a wide array of tools to improve the way they feel, physically, mentally, and emotionally, understanding that improvement in one area of life leads to improvement in others. We want to create a community that inspires and helps one another, encouraging each other to expand to a greater sense of self. We hope to inspire people to lighten up, become playful, and rediscover joy that they may have lost in the daily grind of life.

Describe your history in working in wellness and empowerment and how you came to be where you are today?

I worked as a Nursing Assistant in 1992, in an Aged Care Home. That expanded to working as an Emergency Medical Technician, then Firefighter, then Fitness Trainer certified in Performance Nutrition, then a Mental Health Technician, and eventually, I became a Registered Nurse. I finished a Masters in Psychology and then went on for my Masters in Mental Health Nursing and was qualified as a Nurse Practitioner in 2012. Since then I have provided therapy and medication management to clients in the US.

The mind-body-spirit connection is powerful, and through my years in health I have had a unique opportunity to observe this phenomenon. I believe in that beyond our physical bodies, we have an energetic body and tuning into this can also have powerful effects if the client believes that the energetic body exists. I have trained in many spiritual modalities in addition to the medical. I am a Usui Reiki Master, a ThetaHealing Master and instructor, 200-Hour Yoga instructor, and have taken multiple courses on Metatronic Healing, and Flower of Life (Merkaba) Meditation. I have attended many workshops including those by Joe Dispenza, Abraham-Hicks, and Tony Robbins.

What are the most popular treatments and classes on offer? It's hard to say which will be the most popular since we just opened. Regarding classes, Booty Blast has been a hit at NextGen where I currently teach it. Yogilates and Salsation will also be popular. CryoSoothe, our cellulite reduction treatment is bound to be popular because it gives immediate results. As you've already experienced, Cryotherapy has a great effect on pain. The float tanks will also be very popular.... I hope all the treatments are popular :)

With all of the new technology available now, what do you think "wellness" means today?

I think the key to wellness is giving yourself time to nurture and appreciate yourself, understanding that how you feel about yourself reflects back in both how you look and how people interact with you. Our aim is to empower Canberra by providing technology and holistic therapies which will help everyone connect to their best selves. Technology is both a blessing and a curse, as we can use it to connect to others, but it also can result in a huge disconnect. We have found ways to use tech to enhance the connection with the deepest part of self. When a person has that connection with self, they can more easily connect with others and come to a balance where they naturally find themselves in nature as often as in front of a screen. Finding ways to connect face-to-face as often as online. Taking movement breaks from the desk and ensuring daily exercise. We can use technology to help us in all of those endeavors, such as using Muse meditation headbands, fitness trackers, etc.
