Sydney might seem as though it doesn't quite count as a holiday destination, being far from tropical, international or exotic but in the right magical areas you will find all the ingredients needed for a relaxing break - sunshine, ocean, good eats and hidden beaches. With the Northern Beaches holding a special place in my heart, conjuring memories of wines and endless conversation with my best friend when I lived in Bondi and she lived across the bridge aka 'the other side of the world'. Now being my younger sisters home, I visit often and each time I fall a little more in love with this pocket of my favourite city.
The Boathouse Balmoral
The famous Boathouse Balmoral is a much loved, highly snapped, heavenly place to explore. Balmoral Beach feels miles from the City, despite being a 15 minutes drive - it is tucked at the bottom of a hill and has a small coastal town vibe. The Boathouse is the perfect place to sip a champagne, tuck into healthy, vibrant food and relax. For something light and tasty, opt for the tuna crackers and chicken salad - a divine combination matching the goodness of the Vitamin D coming through the white umbrellas above. The Boathouse Balmoral is light, airy and pure in terms of food, vibe and fit out. This is somewhere to setup and stay for hours, people watching, boat dreaming and soaking up the sunshine.
The Public Dining Room
Grab a takeaway coffee and sit on the beach in front of the The Public Dining Room, shaded by the stunning old fig tree. The Public Dining Room has the same beach views and sits behind the steps down to the sand. The leafy greenery surrounding the building offers refreshing shade and calm after some time in the sun.
The Bathers Pavilion
Further up the esplanade is the beautiful The Bathers Pavilion Cafe - the building is filled with charm and sits beautifully in the surrounds. The Bathers Pavilion has a restaurant on one side and cafe on the other, both offer exceptional dining based around fresh produce and an impressive local and imported wine list. A popular wedding venue, the photo opportunities here are next level - with the re-vamped building maintaining its original charm and design details. It is quite simply, beautiful from every angle and light.
Balmoral Beach is a must-visit for a holiday feel that is close to home. Visit for fresh food, lovely people, peace and quiet and to feel worlds away from the City despite the map suggesting otherwise!
